To continue the theme in my recent article on 11 steps for Creating Truly Restful Sleep, I want to share a few studies that back up the idea that exposure to natural light (or artificial light that simulates natural light) at the proper times improves many factors of health, including sleep (and that exposure to artificial light at the wrong times adversely effects health). This shows the importance of harmony with nature through exposure to natural light throughout the day. It also shows that our use of artificial light, including the light from our computer screens and phones, does indeed affect our health.
This first article shows that use of natural light in offices boosts health.
On a similar note, this study links workplace daylight exposure to sleep, activity and quality of life.
This one suggests that the lack of morning light is keeping teenagers up at night.
Evening blue light exposure has been linked to increased hunger, which may lead to over-eating at night, and disrupt sleep.
Natural, 'blue' light could help teenagers combat stress.
My Recommendations
Get outside a few times a day. Work near a window that allows exposure to natural light when inside. Stop using screens 1 hour before bed.
