THE LATEST NEWS IN FIVE CATEGORIES: NUTRITION, HEALTH, FITNESS, NATURE, AND MIND/BODY/SPIRIT

Chinese Medicine has been saying for years (well, centuries really) that beets improve the blood, is science revealing how?  Can amber tinted glasses and a phone app help you sleep?  Which type of meditation is relaxing, and which type is stimulating?  All this and more, in the Five for Friday.
Nutrition
Beets have some incredible properties, not the least of which is that a compound found in beets can improve blood flow to oxygen starved muscles.  This has positive implications for both athletes and people with heart disease.

Health
Wearing amber tinted glasses for three hours prior to sleep was shown to improve sleep quality.  The reason?  By blocking blue light from screens and devices the mind is no longer tricked by them into thinking that it’s morning. 

You can also use this app to adjust your computer and phone screens automatically to do the same thing.

Fitness

It appears that exercise may increase the tumor-shrinking effects of chemotherapy.  And exercise prior to chemotherapy may also be protective of the heart, which can be damaged by certain chemo drugs.

Nature
Research is ongoing to figure out how to use waste products, like old tires, plastics, and rotting food, to replace petroleum products.  Future innovations might make old dumps look more like mounds of treasure to recyclers.

Mind/Body/Spirit
Different meditations have different effects on the body and mind, as this study shows.  Certain meditations were shown to increase cognitive function, as well as the fight or flight/arousal state; while others were shown to increase the rest/digest/recovery state.
